Overseeding Fescue Grass: Enhance Your Oklahoma Lawn’s Beauty

Maintaining a lush and vibrant lawn in Oklahoma’s varying climate can be a challenging task. One effective technique to bolster the resilience and beauty of your lawn is overseeding with fescue grass. Overseeding involves sowing grass seeds directly into an existing lawn to fill in bare spots, improve density, and enhance overall grass health. Fescue grass, with its adaptability to Oklahoma’s climate, can be a game-changer for achieving a picturesque lawn.

Why Overseed Your Fescue Grass?

  • Drought Tolerance: Our 5-Star Fescue grass is more drought tolerant than typical cool season grasses. This is crucial for Oklahoma’s hot and often dry climate, where water conservation is a top concern.
  • Cool-Season Growth: Fescue is a cool-season grass, meaning it thrives during the fall and spring when temperatures are milder. This counteracts the summer stress that warm-season grasses like Bermuda grass may experience in Oklahoma’s scorching summers.
  • Year-Round Greenery: Overseeding with fescue ensures that your lawn remains green throughout the year, providing a lush backdrop even in the dormant season of warm-season grasses.
  • 5-Star Fescue Can Actually Spread: While fescue grass doesn’t naturally spread like bermuda, the 5-Star Fescue seed that Don’s uses does have the ability to spread like bermuda. This makes it ideal for filling in your bare or sparse fescue areas.

Best Practices for Overseeding Fescue Grass in Oklahoma:

  1. Timing Matters: The ideal time for overseeding in Oklahoma is during the fall, typically between late September and mid-November. This timing capitalizes on warm soil temperatures, reducing competition from warm-season grasses and allowing the fescue seeds to establish before winter.
  2. Preparation is Key: Begin by mowing your existing lawn shorter than usual to allow sunlight to reach the soil. Rake up any debris or thatch to create a clean seedbed.
  3. Seed Selection: Choose high-quality fescue grass seed suited for your specific Oklahoma region. Consider blends that offer a mix of different fescue varieties to enhance disease resistance and overall resilience. We use 5-Star Fescue, which is a special blend of fescues that actually spread much like bermuda and is more drought resistant than typical fescues.
  4. Seeding Technique: Distribute the fescue seeds evenly using a broadcast spreader. To improve seed-to-soil contact, lightly rake the area after seeding. Applying a thin layer of straw mulch can help retain moisture and protect seeds from birds.
  5. Watering Regimen: Consistent watering is crucial during the germination phase. Keep the seeded area consistently moist, but avoid overwatering, which could lead to disease. A gentle misting several times a day may be necessary to prevent the soil from drying out.
  6. Fertilization and Maintenance: After the seed is established, regular fertilization will help ensure success. Gradually reduce watering frequency as the fescue establishes itself. Once established, maintain a regular mowing height of around 3-4 inches.

Set Up Your Lawn for Success

By embracing the practice of overseeding with fescue grass, you’re setting your Oklahoma lawn up for success. The combination of drought tolerance, cool-season growth, and year-round greenery makes fescue a wise choice. Remember, proper timing, preparation, seed selection, and maintenance are the keys to achieving a resilient and picturesque lawn that can withstand Oklahoma’s diverse weather challenges.

Have Don’s Overseed Your Fescue

When choosing Don’s to overseed your fescue, you can rest assured that your fescue will look better than ever. Below is our overseed process:

  • We will cultivate your lawn before seeding to help limit the washout.
  • When applying the seed we generally apply about 2x more seed than the label requires in order to make up for lost seed (birds, washout, etc).
  • After the seed is applied we will turn it over with the rake so the seeds are covered as much as possible.
  • Last, we apply a starter fertilizer which will help the seed germinate more quickly.

Because we have no control over Mother Nature, overseeding services are not guaranteed.

The number of overseed applications needed to get your lawn as thick as you’d like will vary depending on several factors. If you already have fescue and it’s just a little sparse, one application may be enough. If you have completely bare spots, multiple applications will likely be necessary. We recommend overseeding every year in the fall until your fescue is as thick as you like.
